John Hancock John Hancock
(1737-1793) was an American patriot and statesman. Hancock
was the first person to sign the Declaration of
Independence. After the Boston Massacre (in 1770), he was
among those that served on the committee that demanded the
removal of British troops from Boston. Despite being
opposed to the federal Constitution initially, he later
supported it and served as president of the Massachusetts
convention that approved the Constitution in 1788.
